Connecting with content: writing for a groundbreaking mental health initiative

After 20 years in the UK, leading digital health platform Kooth aimed to make an impact stateside.

As a founding member of its US content team, I helped launch Soluna, a new app revolutionizing mental health access for young adults in California — a key part of Gov. Newsom's Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative.

Soluna offers a unique combination of features – it's free, anonymous, and confidential, and provides self-guided, peer, and professional support. But none of that matters if our content doesn’t resonate with our audience.

To make Soluna shine, we tackled micro and macro mental health topics in a way that shared clinical, credible information in a warm, conversational tone.

Inclusivity was also a key consideration. It wasn’t just a box to check — but a core part of our mission. We aimed to create content that was informative but also validating and supportive, especially for diverse, underrepresented communities such as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Indigenous, and more.

Our goal was to ensure that Soluna felt like a safe, welcoming space where diverse experiences were valued and represented.

Result: surpassed aggressive download goals for launch, with healthy month-to-month growth!

A smartphone screen displays an app interface titled 'Culture clash: your values vs your family’s.' The app describes a journey to explore living a meaningful life through values and beliefs, with a start button at the bottom, and icons indicating a 1-5 minute duration and topics like family, identity, respect, self-discovery, and values.

Pitch, research, write, edit… repeat

Generational trauma. Orthorexia. Emotional flooding. These are just a few of the issues I covered in my work.

Each piece told a specific story under broader health and wellness topics, such as emotional regulation, body image, and risk-taking.

If the topic was familiar, I found a fresh angle. If it was unfamiliar, I introduced it in an accessible, actionable way.

At every step, I collaborated with our clinical team to make sure the content met standards for safety and accuracy.
